THRYLL Sneak Peak

THRYLL is a new flash sale e-commerce start up that caters to extreme sports athletes & outdoor enthusiasts. I was asked to join in on their launch. I designed three special boards as part of a limited color series for the site. They will be up for grabs at THRYLL.com starting Oct 17th, so become a member to check out the finished boards and all the other brands they have available. Until then, here’s a sneak peak at the shapes and colors.

Kern Mini Simmons – Rider Report

This shape is testing really well and I’m looking to make more. Let me know if you’d like one. Rider Report: “Okay man so I’ve taken out the sims twice now. First session I had it on nice waist to chest high waves, pretty clean. It was a blast in those conditions, super easy to paddle, catches all kinds of waves, squirty and loose. Oh and fast. All around super fun. Second time out I had it in waist high onshore closeouts, and I didn’t have a great time. As expected, its hard to catch dumpy, late drops on the sims, at least for me, so in closeout conditions there wasn’t much going on. So, so far so good. I think one thing that could improve it might be pulling in the tail, just a bit, but so much fun so far! Thanks Rick!” “Had so much fun on it […]

Ian’s Replica.

I was asked to replicate Ian’s “Magic Board”. He’s had this board replicated something like 6 times. The most recent clone was by Fletcher Chouinard. I spent a good amount of time taking measurements and studying why this is so magic to him. It has a unique foil to it. The tail thins out alot and very quickly, while the thickest point of the board is somewhere around your wasit to your chest and the nose stays full. From that, I can tell its easy to catch waves and seems really fast with a lot of release in the tail for turns. Rider Report: “I have been riding your “Ian Model” for the past week in the Katia swell. You did a fine job replicating my magic board. The new one rides just like the old one, but even better! The thinning/lifting in the tail worked out great. The board picks […]

Sea Monster Quad – Rider Report

There’s a massive amount of time and effort that goes into making a true custom surfboard. It only takes a few sentences like this to keep me smiling. Rider Report Hey Rick, Christened the sea monster today, it’s everything I wanted! You nailed the volume perfectly. The thicker midsection floats and paddles great, and it turns like a skateboard! It was only about thigh to waist and it caught waves super easy. Almost like it was made by a local shaper for local conditions! Also paint looks beautiful in the sunlight, everyone’s stoked on it. I suspect you may be hearing from my surf bud Ralph in the future, not to say myself.  Thanks again for your help with the board, it’s a home run as far as I’m concerned. Best T

NYSFF 2011 Charity Raffle Board

The New York Surf Film Festival 2011 asked for a charity raffle board. We quickly got this one out and it will be on display at the festival starting tomorrow. This board is a thinned out keel fish. It hints at a shortboard’s feel with the super drive of the keel fish. The loss in thickness is gained in the outline and extra foam hidden in the deck and rails. Go get in on the raffle and help support the very worthy charities involved. Thanks to Wynn for the quick and beautiful glassing.

Sea Monster Quad

Latest drop off to Brooklyn, is this sea monster quad. It features super light weight True Ames hexcore fins and gloss / polish glassing by Wynn.

7’2 Mini Thruster

A recent mini that’s an ideal size to learn and quickly get turning. Or great on smaller days for anyone. It’s duck divable but also floaty to catch plenty of waves. Sanded gloss finish glass by Under Toe Glassing.

5’10 Five Fin Double Winger

This a recent 5’10 five fin double winger. With options for fin setup and volume held throughout, this board is made for almost any condition. Low rocker, hard rails, and concaves in the right spots make it move fast. Clear wetsand gloss glassing by Undertoe.

Fin Raffle Winner for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Calling this early. Irene has arrived and my power is not looking good. Be safe! Joe Campbell and Bryce NIhill each win a set of True Ames fins of their choice. Take your pick of a set of fins up to $80. Thank you to all who donated. The Dude Hates Cancer bowling tournament was a huge success. Hopefully they reached their $80k goal.
